Palmers Green – A Home for Everyone

Palmers Green has a lot going for it – it’s close to central London and has good transport links, but with enough green spaces to make you think you are living in the countryside. Here Anthony Pepe, who can help if you have a property for let in Palmers Green, explore this North London district in more detail.

The History and Heritage

The area was originally a tiny hamlet with a village green in the parish of Edmonton, where a prominent local family named Palmer lived (first recorded in the early 17th Century). It grew very slowly over the centuries until the turn of the 20th Century, when a lot more land became available for housing. A number of estates were subsequently built (notably Old Park and Hazelwood Park), and the population of the electoral ward now stands at around 15,000.

The Greek Cypriot Links

Greek Cypriots have been coming to the UK for decades. Mostly, this was because they wanted to escape the political instability at home and left for the UK in search of a better life. The Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974 prompted a fresh wave of migration, and Palmers Green was one of the areas of London they chose to settle in.

This has led to the area being dubbed ‘Palmers Greek’ and ‘Little Cyprus’ – not only can you hear people speaking the language, but there are plenty of shops and restaurants selling Mediterranean fare.

A Home for Everyone

However, Palmers Green is also known as the Jewel in the North (the North referring to London), and it’s not just for the Mediterranean community. Palmers Green Shopping Centre, along Green Lanes in the heart of the district, has a host of stores and eateries to suit all tastes.

There’s plenty on offer apart from the purely commercial aspect. There’s a strong sense of community – newcomers and visitors are made to feel welcome. Moves have also been made to cut down on car as well with recent road adjustments and an increased number of cycle lanes have all helped to bring back some of the area’s original ‘villagey’ feel.

In this respect, it helps that Broomfield Park, pictured above, is nearby - it’s a haven from the hustle and bustle of the centre of the district, even though it’s only a short walk away. The 50-acre public park, which is A Site for Local Importance for Nature Conservation, also has sports courts, a bandstand, a children’s play area and a café.

What About the Housing?

Palmers Green has plenty of Victorian and Edwardian homes, often in tree-lined streets – with very few older than that, given how relatively recently the area has been developed.

Many of the latter style are to be found on the Lakes Estate, with a lot of the neighbourhood’s period homes having been upgraded with more modern facilities. There are also some bespoke modern apartments which have been built in Palmers Green in the last few years.
