Southgate Area Guide

Due to its positioning near the entrance of Enfield Chase, the King’s hunting grounds, this suburban area of North London was named Southgate, and is home to a mixture of working families and professionals.  The popular primary schools have a strong appeal for families, whilst the quick commute into central London means many busy professionals have chosen to make Southgate their home.  With a mixture of 1930s, Edwardian and Victorian homes, the attractive architecture also stretches to Southgate’s own tube station, as the Art Deco Grade II building was designed by Charles Holden.  You will find peace and quiet and period properties to call home, yet the shopping centre in Enfield town is just a short distance away.  Covering 92 acres, Grovelands Park is just one of several large green spaces that fill Southgate, as well as boasting England’s largest oak tree, thought to be over 800 years old.  Although shopping might not be Southgate’s strong point, when it comes to food you are spoilt for choice with an endless variety of restaurants, cafes and coffee shops.

Our Favourite Places

Kris White, our Palmers Green Branch Manager, takes us on a tour of his favourite places in Southgate.

“What I like about Southgate is that you can travel the world in just a day; there is so much choice, from Mediterranean, Italian, American, Indian and of course classic British dishes.  In the heart of Southgate lies Thalassa Seafood Restaurant, whose owner originates from generations of restaurateurs.  It really embodies the Cypriot culture, their staff are full of character and they also have live entertainment. You can’t help but leave without a smile on your face.

Southgate

OK, I admit it, I have a sweet tooth. To curb my sugar needs I like to sneak down to Wilton Patisserie, just looking at those gorgeous cakes on display makes it hard to resist. Their handcrafted cakes look like works of art and I enjoy indulging in one of their creations every now and again.

We can’t talk about Southgate without mentioning the incredible Chicken Shed Theatre Company, which is based here.  Not only do they host a wealth of productions throughout the year, they also have a number of educational programmes.  I remember the first time I saw one of their productions, with their amazingly diverse cast it was an incredibly inspiring experience.

I’m not the only one at Anthony Pepe who likes to nip into the Kings Head on Winchmore Hill.  The food is great, and it’s one of the few gastropubs in the area that has Sky Sports. It’s a good crowd and we always have a great night when we’re watching a game or popping in to check the results.  It is often featured as one of the top 10 pubs in North London, and I’m not surprised.”

The Community

Southgate is nestled in the catchment area of some of the best schools in the country, which is why the local community centres have strong partnerships with many of the prestigious local schools.  Websites such as Love Your Doorstep and N21 Online are designed to connect neighbours to their neighbourhoods; these online communities also bring the local towns and villages together to share and engage in street fairs and parties.

Southgate

Looking around you, the large green spaces host some of the sports that are played throughout the area; Southgate is a base for many cricket teams, not to mention football, rugby and golf teams, who all enjoy the open spaces of Grovelands Park.  The impressive park and nearby lake is also home to the Grovelands Parkrun, which takes place every Saturday morning; everyone is welcome, you can run at your own pace and grab a post-run coffee in the local café. The parkruns are becoming more and more popular, with the volunteers and community making Southgate a healthy and friendly place to live.

Schools

We understand how important your child’s education is to you.  If you are new to the area, we can advise you on properties within a particular catchment area.
