Palmers Green Area Guide

Like most areas in North London, Palmers Green has changed a great deal over the years; once upon a time its streets had virtually no cars, yet this once small village has grown to be a friendly, buoyant and safe place to live.  Described by its residents as the ‘Jewel in the North’, Palmers Green is home to the largest Cypriot community outside of Cyprus, bringing a distinctive Mediterranean flavour to the neighbourhood, with supermarkets and stores providing creative displays of fresh produce to passers-by.

Lined with terraced homes and filled with Edwardian and Victorian architecture, your family will soon find themselves at home among the pretty parks and easy commute into the City.  A café and conservatory has recently opened in Broomfield Park, which you can enjoy throughout the year, as volunteers work with the local council to improve the park’s appearance and facilities.  Today, Palmers Green Shopping Centre runs the length of Green Lanes, a vibrant parade of shops, restaurants and cafés.  With new developments underway, this regeneration will bring country charm and a touch of the modern to this corner of North London.

Our Favourite Places

Mina Gadelrab and Nicholas Marsh, both Senior Sales Negotiators at our Palmers Green branch, want to show us their neck of the woods.

Where is your favourite place to eat?

Nick: “Mine has to be Aksula.  It’s a traditional Turkish restaurant and takeaway, and the food and atmosphere is fantastic.  I can highly recommend the steaks.”

Mina: “The Greek restaurant, Nissi, it has a great feel about it and the food is delicious.”

Where do you pop for lunch?

Mina: “It depends how much time I have; if I’m in a rush I just go to Sainsbury’s, but if I have time, it has to Aksula, as Nick said, it’s fantastic.”

Nick: “No question: Aksula.”

Where do you recommend for an evening out?

Nick: “I think we will agree on this one again, Inn on the Green.”

Mina: “Absolutely, not only do they serve great beers but they also show all the matches. We often go down to watch the rugby, it was a great night.”

The community

Palmers Green celebrates its diverse community and the different cultures that make up the neighbourhood. The area is home to many families whose children attend the array of local schools, yet they all join together when we begin to talk about the community. As a family-oriented place, the street fairs and events benefit from much involvement from the children and schools; these activities become quite infectious, as the whole neighbourhood comes out in force to join in the fun.

Since 2010 the Palmers Green Festival has been held in Broomfield Park; confirming its place in your cultural diary, the event spreads further than just the local community, with thousands of visitors attending the free event. Although fires have damaged the historical Broomfield House, locals have planted a community orchard here whilst they continue to campaign for the House to be restored, breathing new life as a community centre to serve the proud residents of Palmers Green.

Heading into the weekend, your Sunday mornings can be spent at the popular community market, where local farmers, craft enthusiasts and locals gather in the Station car park. “One Sunday a month they close off Devonshire Road so that no cars can pass. This allows all the children to be able to play in the streets in a safe environment. Once a year they also do a summer fair, the community spirit in this area is heart warming, which is why it is a special place to live.” Mina Gadelrab
